July 1, 2010
As summer begins, the legislative session is coming to an end. This month, my colleagues and I passed the final FY '11 budget that reflects our difficult economic situation and uses reforms and cost cutting measures to balance the budget. I strove to ensure that our local values and concerns are supported by this budget. I have also been active in the district, attending an exciting announcement for the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail and the ever-popular Fifer's Day in Boxborough.
Reducing vehicle-related fatalitiesCommon-sense safety regulations have been shown to be an effective tool in reducing vehicle-related fatalities. This month I helped pass two pieces of legislation that work to fill gaps in current safety regulations. An Act Relative to Safe Driving helps prevent vehicle accidents by prohibiting text messaging while driving, prohibiting drivers under the age of 18 from using a cell phone while driving, and requiring a vision test every five years for drivers over 75. After working closely with concerned constituents, I also supported increased off-road safety measures by voting for a bill to improve ATV safety. This bill focuses on both protecting youth operators and maintaining and expanding our state's recreation trails.
Bruce Freeman Rail Trail and MinuteVanHere in the district, support for alternative local transportation has been bourgeoning. Two weeks ago, I joined the Lieutenant Governor, Senator Eldridge and Representative Atkins in announcing that we will be fully funding the design for the next major sections of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. I also attended a MinuteVan Meeting to discuss the proposed local shuttle and other transportation options in Acton and Boxborough. These exciting proposals will help enhance access to alternative transportation and recreation activities.
Strengthening the connections between state and local levels
As a past school committee member, I have great respect for public service at the local level. This month I thanked Lunenburg and Boxborough School Committee retirees at receptions celebrating their service, attended Shirley's Annual Town Meeting, and toured the North Acton Water District. I also met with my District Advisory Group composed of representatives from the Boards of Selectmen and School Committees of every town in the district to facilitate communication and coordination between my efforts in the State House and the local efforts of town officials.
I was pleased to talk with and listen to so many constituents in the past few weeks. I joined our veterans at Memorial Day Celebrations in Acton and Boxborough to commemorate the sacrifices made for our country and I celebrated with residents at Boxborough's Fifer's Day. I have also continued to reach out to community interest groups by meeting with the Gun Owner's Action League. Finally, I was happy to personally congratulate and recognize the accomplishments of some new Eagle Scouts in the district.
Stay in touch and get involvedI look forward every month to hearing from all of you.
