BOSTON, MA — Representative Benson asks the public to join her in celebrating School Nurse Recognition Day this May 11th. The day was set aside nationally to honor the contributions of school nurses to their schools and their communities.
School nurses play a critical role in positively influencing the health and education of students across the Commonwealth. They keep kids in classrooms, ready and prepared to learn. School nurses are also on the frontlines fighting childhood obesity, head injuries, bullying, depression and other infectious diseases and health issues. As the number of children with special health care needs continues to rise, school nurses keep them safe and in the classroom. Every school nurse also manages comprehensive, coordinated health services within the school setting; providing mandated health screenings, managing the school's medication program, and educating children on disease management.
"Our school nurses play an essential part in ensuring every child reaches his or her full potential, keeping all children safe and in the classroom ready to learn. Today children with various medical conditions, from asthma to cancer, have the opportunity to go to school in their hometown with their friends and neighbors with the support and peace of mind that only a healthcare professional can provide. School nurses are heroes to many families, and I hope you will join me in recognizing their efforts and thank them for their work."
"We are so happy to honor the school nurses across the Commonwealth," said Donna Kelly-Williams, RN, President of the Massachusetts Nurses Association. "They do such important work day after day by creating an environment in which all children, no matter what their disability or health issue, can make the most out of their educational experience."
