Jen Benson, State Representative, 37th Middlesex District
Benson has a track record of getting things done

September 16, 2010—The Beacon

To the editor: I'd like to add my voice to the conversation about why I support Jen Benson for state representative of the 37th District.

First. Jen Benson knows how Town Government works. Long before seeking elected office as our State Representative, Jen served on the Lunenburg School Committee for five years - chairing the committee for 2 of those years. As School Committee Chair she worked collaboratively with the town Finance and Capital Planning Committees managing a budget of $15 million.

Compare that to Kurt Hayes, a resident of Boxborough, who hasn't served on any Boxborough town committees. Not on the Finance Committee or the Personnel Committee or the Planning Board or any other Town Committee. Granted not everyone has the time nor inclination to volunteer in his or her community. But Kurt says he is "not a bystander" - yet he has done nothing in the way of public service for Boxborough town government Second.

Second, Jen Benson has a track record of getting things done. Remember the ice storm of 2008? At the time, Jen had not been sworn into office - but that did not stop her from getting involved. Jen met with elected officials and residents to ensure that utility companies were responding to the needs of their customers. After taking office, Jen sponsored a bill, which strengthened oversight of public utilities.

Compare that to Kurt Hayes. He's been a "bystander" in Boxborough Town government.

Third, Jen Benson does what's right, even if it's not popular. In June 2009, Jen broke ranks with her party voting against the state budget for Fiscal 2010 because of the deep cuts in local aid to the towns she represents. While this position was not terribly popular, Jen did what was right and voted in the best interests of her constituents. Compare that to Kurt Hayes.

Fourth, Jen Benson is a full time state representative. She is available and accessible to her constituents 24/7. Kurt Hayes said that if he wins the election, he will continue to work for IBM while acting as our State Representative.

Which do you prefer a full time or part time State Representative?

So, if you want someone who gives 110 percent - who does what's right - not necessarily what's popular - someone who knows how town government works - someone with a track record of community service - then vote for Jen Benson.
